On Finding Out for Yourself

November Project: Question #18

This question comes from an old friend through Skype

I understand the importance of finding out for myself. And I hope to find the truth of my functioning, but I don't know how to do it. Where should I begin?

You begin with yourself. If you want to "Find the truth of my functioning," as you've said, that is what you must do.

Everything you say, think, believe, and feel all points back to something. Find out what that something is.

I hope you can do this, I really do. But I am not sure you will. You say you understand the importance of finding out for yourself, and yet your first instinct is to ask someone else how it's done...

Good luck, my friend.

Thanks, Evan.

You make a great point about the journaling. If someone keeps everything in their head, it can get quite muddy in there, haha. Putting those thoughts onto paper can be beneficial, as it tends to clear things up in an interesting way.

You can try keeping a journal. Or you can compare your experience with other's ideas (either through conversation or books and whatnot).

It can help to have a sense of difference as a way to get a sense of ourselves. Finding where we are different can be a starting point. So can finding our similarities.

It can be helpful to start with little things that you are not too attached to. In this way our strong beliefs and feelings don't cloud our observation.

Hope these few thoughts help.
